Aftermath of Wednesday’s shooting ‘into the air’ by soldiers of the 7th Division Maiduguri, at the Maimalari Barracks, the GOC in charge of the division, Major General Ahmed Mohammed was yesterday removed.
Describing the incident that happened after the GOC addressed soldiers who were angry at the killing of their colleagues during an ambush, media reports had indicated that soldiers also shot sporadically because they were dissatisfied by the poor welfare conditions they were getting from the authorities of the division.
A General simply told Vanguard that Major General Mohammed has been replaced by Brigadier General Mahmud Yakubu Ibrahim as Acting GOC and that Ibrahim appointment is with immediate effect.
With the Defence headquarters denying that there was any insurrection at Maimalari barracks and that the soldiers only shot at the air, it was unclear yesterday, why the former GOC was removed.
